Lynsey Storer, an op-artist based in London, paints the intricate, complex geometric patterns that lead to the optical illusions associated with 'Op Art'. Her paintings have evolved from a strong interest in light and her attempts to recreate this through the use of colour and pattern; allowing a reverberation of the picture plane. Informed by a Greenbergian philosophy concerning the shape of each canvas, the properties of the pigment and the flatness of the picture plane, her work investigates different possibilities of patterns, push-pull space and the relationship between Payne’s Grey and Titanium White. Although she uses a pencil and a ruler to set-up each painting, she paints these kaleidoscopic patterns in free-hand, without the use of masking tapes.

"Her experiments with colour interaction and pattern deviation have introduced a confidence and a playfulness, a retinal refuge if you will. "

Her interest in optical art dates back to her university days and her ongoing study of this genre has allowed Lynsey a certain freedom to experiment with colour interaction and pattern deviation. This has introduced a confidence, a playfulness, a welcome element of softness inside the visual assault, a retinal refuge if you will. Her paintings really are an experience, a uniquely personal one.

Lynsey studied for her BA in Visual Art with Art History at York University, with further studies at Cyprus College of Art. She then continued to her PGCE in Art & Design Education from University of Northumbria and has since completed an MA in Education at Newcastle University.
